University PR: Publication & Communication

Emily Fornshell spent her summer working as a public relations intern at Western Connecticut State University. Most of her responsibilities were writing press releases that were published on local town websites to advertise university events. In addition to publishing promotional material, Emily worked on rewriting the university’s Wikipedia entry and reworking the school’s online image. Another project that spanned the course of the summer was the organization and publication of a university “Experts Guide,” an online database of faculty and staff who are experts in their field for use by outside media producers in search of expert opinions. Emily’s internship was focused on creating material for publication and circulation in the community, as well as representing the university to its faculty, staff, and students. This internship emphasized the importance of internal PR as well as organizational skills, project leadership, and effective written communication.
