Empire State of Mind By Jessica A. Ortiz
Radio sets itself apart from other forms of mass communication because it is not visual and focuses on the use of oral storytelling. Even in this technological age, voices on the radio provide an intimate space for the interaction between a speaker and their audience. This summer I was a part of the street promotions team at WSKQ La Mega 97.9 FM in New York City. I found myself not only deejaying at local festivals and small business throughout the 5 boroughs, I was also able to apply my analytical and creative thinking skills to a fast-paced work environment in an industry located in one of the most congested and saturated places for it. Needless to say, "Veni, vidi, vici"...I learned the steps I should be taking now to form my future career, and how to find success and happiness in both non-profit and mainstream radio. My goal for this presentation is to provide you with a glimpse into the ways in which I have been able to use this experience to complement my music and humanities coursework with an empire state of mind.
