From Transitional Justice to Social Entrepreneurship

Working with the International Center for Transitional Justice has changed the way I think about international institutions and their functions immensely. While my role in the organization involved intensive research and case studies, and proved to be very rewarding and meaningful, I realized that I wanted something that required more creativity and less structure. I felt bound by the difficult topics we were constantly discussing and working on, and completely disjointed from the community that I was potentially helping.

As a result, I wanted to pursue something that had visible growth and involved more creativity. This goal presented itself in the form of Advocates for World Health, a social entrepreneurship startup that collects medical surplus within the United States and ships it to under-served medical facilities around the world. My presentation will trace the trajectory of my goals from start to finish and outline how I was able to find a balance between my desire to do international social work and take a step back from large institutions.
