The Story of a Stamp: A Summer at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum
Communication and storytelling both play key roles in the existence of the United States postal system. Letters pass on stories, traveling hundreds of miles to deliver a message. The postal system has an elaborate history. This is a story of artwork, transportation and security systems. People hold stories about their experiences receiving mail or working for the United States Postal Service. While working as an Education intern at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, I learned how to tell this range of stories to different audiences and through a range of mediums. To reach broader audiences, I developed a storytime program to help the museum reach out to neighborhood families, building community. In addition, I worked the information desk, ran spider press demonstrations, built up the museum library and sat in on meetings throughout the institution, collectively opening my eyes to the museum world.
