Carr 102 Pedagogy and Policy: From West to East
There is a fine line between success and failure, and for most individuals, that line is defined by whether or not they have access to an education. The sense of what it means to provide an education spans far beyond the concrete factors, and over the summer our panelists had the opportunity to reach past the status quo to discover solutions to overcoming obstacles of inequality, lack of resources, and restrictive policies to provide student’s with the quality education they deserve. In the words of a leader, Martin Luther King, Jr., “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education” and these four panelists used their internship experience to fulfill such expectations. In Holyoke, MA our first presenter had on-the-ground experience with local teens, engaging students in discourse about personal identities and more; this comes full circle as our second presenter, and Holyoke native, had a chance to apply her tangible educational experience in an at-risk school system by addressing the education policies that influence such outcomes as an intern for Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren in Washington, DC. Our third presenter left one women’s college for another across the globe where she was able to connect with women in Japan, and while in Ecuador, the experience of a natural classroom breathed new life into our fourth presenter’s educational values. If we continue supporting learning opportunities in the same way as these bold individuals, we can improve our education system and hence, change the way our children interact with the world.

Clapp 203 4 Countries 4 Banks: Banking Globally
The financial sector is one of the most valued and fastest growing industries. Providing services to individuals, institutions, and governments, this fast paced environment focuses on investment strategies that support economic growth and wealth. Combining multi-cultural perspectives on banking from three continents, we share our wealth of experiences in the financial services industry. Drawing on client and institutional based focuses, our breadth encompasses equity, investment banking, & wealth management. Behind the numbers and the “stress culture” of entry-level positions in financial institutions, we reflect on our preconceived notions and how they were transformed. Seeing that our internships varied, we would like to exhibit our different perspectives through the lenses of divergent corporate cultures.

Clapp 206 Art From Every Angle: Views from History, Neuroscience, Crafts and Management
Adventures in history, neuroscience, crafts, and arts management coalesce to examine the experience of visual arts. Our internships demonstrate the ways in which art intersects with modern society and lives, specifically the processes in creating, experiencing, understanding, and sharing art. We investigate how art is beneficial to people, similarities in creative and scientific methods, the consumption and production of art, and how media plays a role in aesthetic preferences. Each panel categorically explores the perspectives of creators, viewers, scientists, art historians, and promoters. Coming from the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, a hand papermaking studio in New York City, a gallery in Singapore, and museums in Washington D.C., join us in delving into art from every angle.

Clapp 218  We G.I.V.E: Growth, Investment, Value, and Enrichment
Delving into the various communities of the world, these panelists provide insightful experiences on what it means to “give back.” This panel speaks on different accounts of community building, volunteerism, and total cultural immersion. From building confidence and social awareness amongst women in Peru and advocating for cultural education in Vietnam to promoting a healthy diet in India and mentoring high school students in New York City, these panelists offer a unique perspective on social awareness, education, business, and law. Presenters, Arielle Derival, Mai Nguyen, Tanvi Shah, and Rockia Coulibaly have grown from investing time, effort, and dedication to enriching members of the community in order to add value to global society. How can one creatively apply their liberal arts background towards giving back to the community? This is the question we will be addressing in our presentations.

Clapp 306 Advancing Pediatric Healthcare in Research and in Practice
Through hands-on experience, the four panelists describe the intersection of research and clinic to explore how the two work in tandem to benefit patients in a global context. From searching for a cure for Ewing Sarcoma, researching risk factors in allergic proctocolitis, understanding emotional responses in children, and practicing as a nursing assistant in Bolivia, the panelists unite with the ultimate future goal of advancing pediatric healthcare. This panel seeks to extend knowledge of psychology, genetics, and immunology to advance clinical work by expanding knowledge of disease mechanisms to treat patients more efficiently and effectively.

Cleveland L1 The Power of Telling a Story
What difference can a story make?  Words and images powerfully express ideas and emotions in ways that effect both the storyteller and those who receive the stories. This summer our panel members embarked on internships that explored different avenues of crafting stories. Each person incorporated multiple elements of storytelling to convey meaning within different contexts from creating a story-time program for children, to helping people to tell their own stories digitally, to gathering interviews and images in order to inform narratives, to improving the technical skills needed to tell stories through film. Our panel members interned and completed their research in diverse areas from the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., to Nicaragua, to Italy, to Texas.  Come and discover what lives around a story.

Cleveland L2 Exhibiting Excellence
Are you interested in history or art but wonder what you can do as a career with these interests? This panel covers the wide variety of opportunities in the field of cultural preservation. From a gallery in London, to a castle in France; the oldest timber frame home on the continent, to the archives of the first women's college, we learned to channel our collective passion for sharing information, art, and history with the outside world in interesting and engaging ways. Although each of us has faced the question: What will you do with that major? This summer we experienced the endless, world-wide possibilities one can find with a love for arts and culture.

Cleveland L3 Navigating Creative Industries in NYC
Can a liberal arts education shape a student’s interest in the fashion world? Music industry? Theater industry? Coming from a liberal arts background we conceptualize the business of performance art, fashion world, and the music industry in ways that allow arts culture to continue building and cultivating. New York City has been the cultural mecca of the arts for centuries; creating and attracting various mediums and crafts, it continues to influence millions. Art is alive in the city and the three of us were lucky enough to experience its creative means first hand. From our diverse internships, including radio hosting in a plethora of integrated cultures, fashion editorial work, theater, and brand management, to live subway performances of the natives, free plays at Prospect Park, and moments at the MOMA, our exposure to NYC has been nothing less than cosmopolitan. Our summer opportunities not only encompassed these metropolitan values, but also prepared us for our future endeavors in creative industries. We welcome you to attend our panel and witness the nostalgia of our experiences and the exhibition of artistic value in NYC.

Kendade 107 Great Expectations: What You Wouldn't Expect
We all share the feeling that our internship experiences, upon reflection, turned out much differently than we expected. We will ruminate and expound upon the significance of our experiences not quite coalescing with our expectations, and how our summers might affect our future ambitions and endeavors in our preferred career fields. The real world forces us to reconsider our previous intentions, and we have become more informed and prepared young adults as a result.

Traversing Disciplines: The Art of Navigating Two Internships
Though each one of us started off the summer hopeful, starry-eyed and ready with specific goals in mind, we each ended up seeking an alternative path: a second internship. This was a path that ultimately led us towards transformative and enriching experiences, though not quite as directly as we had each (once!) envisioned. From international to national, NGO's to Fortune 500's, formalized to unstructured, our experiences were varied and expansive, and our perspectives ultimately enhanced. This is the journey that we wish to share with our audience.

Self-Guided Effort on a Journey Toward Purpose
This panel will investigate the ways in which four students explored their passion and interests in an environment that made such exploration difficult at times. Though each student came out of their internship with extended knowledge in their field, improved problem solving skills, and the ability to find purpose through self-guided effort, they had to work hard to search for these meaningful experiences. How does one find space to grow in an environment that does not seem to provide much room for growth?

Kendade 305 The Four States of Chemistry: Discovery from Macro to Nano
You might think research in chemistry is all the same: mixing chemicals, carrying out reactions, washing beakers, etc. However, scientific research is much more than that. Our panel of future (bio)chemists have approached various topics of chemistry in innovative ways. Our panelists had internships in areas ranging from nanotechnology, photovoltaics, crystallography to industrial analysis. By connecting what we learned in the classroom and laboratory, we were able to collaborate in a challenging environment addressing complex cases with broad implications. We invite you to our panel to broaden your horizon on how chemistry plays an impact on real life issues of the 21st century and how we can use our bright minds to combat these challenges.
