Practicing Paper: Grasping the Creative Process Through Papermaking

Paper is a persistent part of our lives, serving both lofty and lowly roles. It is a familiar presence from our printers to our bathrooms. Paper is also a unique and versatile artistic medium that can take on a range of textures, sizes, and dimensions. Dieu Donné, a New York City organization that introduces artists of all experience levels to handmade paper, explores the boundaries of paper’s possibilities. As a studio intern, I was able to see how several artists approached the creative process through paper and to delve deep into the details of paper production while participating in the collaboration and experimentation that occurs on the edges of art and craft.
