Anthropology and Media: The Goal and the Process
The stories that we tell, and how we communicate those stories to others expresses many things about the cultures that we participate in. One way that anthropologists gather the data needed to complete their work is through the use of media. As an aspiring anthropologist, I want to be able to share communities stories through both interviews, participant observation, and possibly documentary style films. This past summer I interned with a small production company that allowed me to improve my skill with camerawork and editing, which may inform how I conduct research in the future. The process of learning the skills that I will need in future film-making endeavors was not always smooth. I had to learn when and where to ask for help. I believe that honing these skills will be valuable in the future.
