The Gut Microbiome in Allergic Proctocolitis

The gut microbiome is known to be associated with and contribute to the mechanisms of many diseases. Previous research has established an association between allergic diseases and an altered microbiome; however, less is known about the role of the microbiome in gastrointestinal allergic disease. Research is necessary to better understand the risk factors and pathology underlying gastrointestinal allergic diseases in order to develop better therapeutic and preventative strategies for the future. I spent my summer at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children researching risk factors and the role of the microbiome in allergic proctocolitis. My research explored the impact of perinatal antibiotic exposure and delivery via cesarean section on microbial diversity and the development of allergic proctocolitis. In my presentation, I will discuss my research project, the challenges I faced working in a laboratory setting, and the skills necessary to be successful in the medical field.
