Remembering Frances Perkins: Working to Raise Social and Economic Awareness

Frances Perkins is an esteemed alumna of Mount Holyoke College (1902), and she is remembered throughout the College as a woman of influence and intelligence. As the Secretary of Labor in Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Cabinet, she sought to improve education, public policy, and social justice for the working class. The Frances Perkins Center, a small non-profit in Maine, works to inspire people to address social and economic problems just as Frances Perkins did. As the Frances Perkins Center intern, Katherine Danyluk was given the to opportunity to work closely with the staff and board members; with her multi-faceted position, she was able to gain perspective on the time and effort needed to run a non-profit organization. Her presentation today will discuss her work with the Frances Perkins Center, the insight she gained into Perkins’ life, and the personal and professional growth gained in this experience.
