Intellectual Walks on Xiaoyun Lu: Preparing Chinese High School Students for America and American Colleges

The amount of international students in American higher education, specifically Chinese students, has risen significantly. This is in part due to the efforts of education consulting companies in Northeast Asia, working to expand global access to liberal arts tertiary education. This summer I interned with the Elite Scholars of China, a small education consulting company in Beijing, China. I worked with Chinese high school students applying to American colleges. This involved a wide range of roles from helping to develop and facilitate a class on American College Culture to meeting with students one-on-one to work on resumes and interview skills. I will examine the cultural exchanges and personal growth that took place while working with Chinese students, not just as an American, but as a Black woman. I will also look at the skills required and gained while working in education consulting. Students with an interest in education, international education, international affairs, or East Asia will benefit from this presentation, as it provides insight to experiences working in China and a possible career path.
