Girl Rising: Education from Behind the Scenes

Teaching children and working for an NGO in a community where neither are considered important was the challenge I decided to embark on during the summer. I was given three months to raise awareness within a community about the benefits of education for girls and the pros of obtaining aid from an NGO. This task while not being easy, came with lot learning: from conducting interviews, meeting new people, learning a new language, and being accepted within a society, was all very enriching for me. At times I questioned my ability to help make a change. Eventually I learned that I was bringing in a different perspective. A perspective that I was able to bring through the integration of my personal past experiences and my professional present experiences. This experience taught me that every cloud has a silver lining. Regardless of the obstacles I faced, my silver lining in this journey was that the community that I entered as a stranger, eventually became my home.
