Exceeding Expectations: Data in Healthcare Administration

The common perception of healthcare usually looks like an episode of “ER”, the hustle and bustle of doctors and nurses running from patient to patient. While that is an intricate piece of healthcare, it does not make up the entire picture. The other vital piece of any medical institution is the administration. Data plays a huge part in administration. The creation of budgets, collecting patient information, and developing goals for the facility and strategies for how to achieve those goals, are all forms of data. Of which are essential to a well-running medical institution. This past summer I had the opportunity to experience a hospital in midst of expansion. As an International Affairs & Business Intern I did more than fetch coffee. I was able to make a valuable contribution to the hospital and exceeded the expectations of my managers. In turn, the internship exceeded my expectations as well.
