Effective policies based on informed research: UNICEF’s strategy for Child Poverty Reduction

Alleviating Child Poverty is crucial as it affects not only an individual child but is passed onto future generations, causing a vicious cycle of poverty. It is for this reason that the meeting Millennium Development Goal of reducing "extreme poverty" requires moving many children out of monetary poverty. UNICEF analyzes the various ways in which children experience poverty to formulate effective policies that can guide national poverty reduction strategies. Child Poverty is a multidimensional concept that can be measured and addressed in many ways. As a Research Intern at the Social Policy, Inclusion and Budgeting Division of UNICEF Headquarters, my work consisted of analyzing and documenting the various monetary and non-monetary poverty reduction strategies being used by developing countries to serve as guidance for Sustainable Goal Implementation. In addition, I conducted statistical tests on the difference between income and consumption approaches of estimating child poverty to help build a more consistent measure of household welfare.
