Reframing the Conversation around Phyllodes Tumors of the Breast
Phyllodes tumors are a rare type of breast tumors for which surgical excision with wide margins is the recommended treatment. When those margins are not considered wide enough, the patient is encouraged to undergo a second procedure in order to ensure the complete excision of the tumor.
My research this summer focused on evaluating the necessity of this re-excision procedure, as it is a heavy financial, physical, and psychological burden for patients. I found evidence that the current surgical protocol may not be adapted to the needs and desires of patients, and I had to defend my controversial interpretations of the data in front of scientific experts.
Beyond a clinical research experience, my summer provided me with meaningful ways to think about how culture and science work together.
