Providing Communication Tools to Empower English as Second Language Learners to Fight for Social Justice in Argentina
Working in Argentina, I discovered that culture, politics and language morphs together into one powerful butterfly. The aim is to empower students to fight for social change. It is the responsibility of educators to provide effective communication tools necessary to impact tangible change. The idea is to work within the Latin American context, highlighting on ways to reform society through intercultural communication. The key lies in student-centered learning where students develop skills applicable to solving real world issues. Making curriculum and courses relevant to that historical context does not only motivate English Language Learners to acquire global language skills but it also bridges cultural barriers and allows avenues in which individual identities are also explored. For an educator, finding a way to strike that balance between providing necessary instructions and making it relevant to their students’ reality is a step in the right direction.
