Sleeping Away: Everything You Missed out on about Sleep Disorders
Ever wake up in the morning extremely tired despite 7-8 hours of sleep and wonder why? Does snoring mean you have sleep apnea? The answer to some of these questions can be found amongst experts in the relatively new, but ever-evolving, subspecialty of Sleep Medicine. With the new convenience and affordability of home-sleep testing (HST) over the gold standard Polysomnography (PSG) sleep study, many are choosing to home-sleep test for sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. After working with some of the top researchers in Sleep Research at the Johns Hopkins Sleep Disorder Center, I will provide insight in working in the field of Sleep Research, as well as explanation for several questions such as: What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea? What is the chance that you have it and how can you tell? Why are changes required in home-sleep testing in order to properly diagnose OSA? While setting out to examine the original question of whether the sensitivity & specificity of the Berlin Questionnaire varies as a function of gender, a new question arose regarding the questionnaire's validity for OSA in Home-Sleep Testing devices.
