Life After Film Studies: Exploring Diverse Opportunities in the Professional Film World

Despite being a Film Studies major, I began my two internships this summer unsure of whether or not I even wanted to work in film. However, with the experiences that I was able to have in two very different fields – the independent film industry and film criticism/editorial – I learned how to apply what I've learned in my studies to the professional world. Also, my work as a pre-production and eventual production assistant for an experimental filmmaker was greatly informed by my work in an office setting as an editorial intern at Film Comment Magazine. Despite encountering challenges, I came away from each opportunity understanding and appreciating how the two are interconnected. Just as importantly, I learned how to combine skills I developed and acquired from both, teaching me about what kinds of work I was personally interested in pursuing, as well as what I wasn't as excited about.
