The Philippines and I: A Tireless Pursuit of Social Justice Despite Personal Challenges

Children are most exploited when faced by the grim realities rampant poverty brings. In most developing states, the persistence of poverty cultivates an ideal setting where children are either sexually exploited or illegally submitted into jails without legal pending cases. The People’s Recovery Empowerment and Development Assistance, or PREDA, is an NGO in the Philippines that offers children a rehabilitative space and assistance in pursuing legal cases against perpetrators of child abuse. Elaine Joy will be discussing the various experiences of being in the forefront of today’s battle against rampant social injustice. She will also be referencing different cross-cultural challenges in nonprofit work and how Mount Holyoke has prepared her to sensibly tread a sea of multicultural dialogues. Further discussions will involve an overview of other PREDA programs such as Fair Trade for indigenous communities and scholarship opportunities PREDA offers rescued children.
