Leveraging Intercultural Competence at the Chinese Ministry of Environment Protection
How to govern a river? How to modify air quality regulations? These questions appear to be domestic environmental issues. However, in order to find great answers to these questions, multilateral collaboration is often beneficial and essential. This is because many environmental problems are becoming increasingly international in nature. Last summer, I interned at the Foreign Economic Cooperation Office (FECO) at the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection. In my presentation, I will reflect on how my experience shaped my understanding of the role of international cooperation in environmental policymaking and governance. For those curious about the working environment in the Chinese government, I will also discuss the organizational culture at FECO in terms of employees’ educational backgrounds, gender dynamic, and etc. Based on this analysis, I will expand on what I observed as a transformation in the working culture at the Chinese government, especially in fields related to international relations.
