Epstein-Barr Virus-Like Particle Production for Vaccine Research

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is one of the most recurrent viruses found in humans. Infection occurs often during childhood and early adulthood, which increases the risk for infectious mononucleosis. However, EBV infection is also strongly associated with particular forms of cancer like Burkitt's lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. At UMass Medical School, we are developing an EBV virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine to neutralize EBV infection. During my time at UMass, I had the opportunity to learn a range of valuable techniques in molecular biology, the managerial aspects of laboratory maintenance and set-up, and the challenges of working independently.
