International Environmental Consultancy at Home in Mongolia: Can Mining be Sustainable?
Mongolia’s rich mineral resources have attracted numerous foreign investors in the recent decades, leading to increasing number of mining projects that require international consultancy services. This summer I interned at Sustainability East Asia, a Mongolia branch of Australia-based consultancy firm, which assists both local and international clients in environmental management, impact assessment, socioeconomic development and stakeholder engagement. Learning what constitutes responsible business practices for a controversial industry like mining, and readiness to switch between different languages, cultures and attitudes while interacting with staff, clients and stakeholders, I developed myself both professionally and personally. Looking back to my previous internship at a national environmental authority of Mongolia, I could also reflect on how environmental services offered by entities that are locally and internationally managed or those in public and private sector can differ.
