Community: Working Together to Solve Social Issues
How do community organizations, in an urban setting, tackle social issues related to their context? Two important social issues, which arise in an economically poor sector in an urban setting, are illiteracy and innumeracy. In Managua, Nicaragua Obdulia Valle worked with a community based organization, Podcasts for Peace, which has formed to battle both these issues. In this presentation, Obdulia will reflect on her experience working alongside Podcasts to eliminate illiteracy and innumeracy taking a community based approach. She will explain her struggles in entering the community, and how she adapted her work based on the community’s resources, culture, and needs.
