Where There's a Whisk, There's a Way

From working with chefs to launch new products and assisting with social media campaigns, my internship was an opportunity for me to explore a career in the food industry. As an intern at the Old Madras Baking Company, I not only learnt about the production aspect but also the business side, which included finance and strategy elements. My Mount Holyoke classes such as Accounting enabled me to prepare sales and margin analyses. My other off- campus classes and my barista job also helped me examine the bigger picture of the company, how to target-market products, and observe the steps involved in opening new stores. Working in an artisanal bakery made me realize the importance of educating customers about healthier and preservative-free products in India, such as bread. From my summer experience, I developed strategies to promote natural and healthy food options for members of my community, and understood how a food business operates.
