Redefining Progress: An Educational and Cultural Perspective

As globalization rapidly closes the gaps between the continents, a door opens for the redefinition of cultural and national values in respect to the perspectives of countries in contact. The so-called “progress” that globalization provides developing countries with unfortunately asks cultural heritage to pay the price. Nevertheless, welcoming, exploring, evaluating and applying new ideas must not be neglected if a nation desires to find its voice appreciated among the world powers and emerging powers. Consequently, striking a balance between embracing new ideas and cultural reservation is the goal of a vast majority of educators all over the world. This panel will explore how traditional and American curricula and all the values embedded are and are not compromising with one another as well as how progress can be and has to be redefined through education within the context of a private US-affiliated international school in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
