Exploring Career Paths- International Development and Health Research
Helping others will be an important aspect of my future career. This summer I was able to explore two different career options- an internship with the Molecular Surgical Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital during which I conducted microbiology laboratory research dealing with antibiotic resistance, and an internship with the non-profit organization the Refugee Immigration Ministry during which I worked directly with asylum seekers. During the laboratory research I worked with the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, one of the most prevalent antibiotic-resistant species. I conducted western blot experiments in addition to growing bacteria as a basis for exploring the effects of a new drug compound on biofilm formation. During the internship at the non-profit institution I worked as the assistant to the Executive Director. I provided ESL services to asylum seekers, was responsible for social media, gained experience with fundraising, and was responsible for establishing a new internship and volunteer program.
