Off-Off-Broadway to Off-Broadway to Broadway

What does it mean to work in the New York theatre scene? How does my experience as a young woman of color who attends Mount Holyoke impact the way I view theatre?

Running a theatre company from its inception is no small feat. Coalescing a theatre company’s mission all while putting up a show, or even a series of shows can be tricky. It requires a team of multi-faceted players creating work together at the right time.

This past summer I interned at the Manhattan Theatre Company. In its 45th year, it is one of the nation’s leading theatre companies producing three Broadway shows and five off-Broadway shows annually. How does a company, from humble beginnings, go from producing off-Broadway showcases to producing shows that are deeply embedded in the American theatre scene? I am still not too sure. However, this past summer I learned to think critically as to what is produce-able within the New York theatre scene. I scoured plays upon plays and began to understand the corporate responsibility of a company’s mission statement to bring its audiences what it has promised.
