Communication is Key: What it Really Means to Work in Communications, PR, and Marketing

Many people see communications, marketing, and PR as primarily used to aid in the cover-up of information for companies, businesses, and even other people. It is a skill set only seen typically at the forefront of a disaster. But what if that isn’t true at all, and in fact the sole purpose of these fields is to get the message of a product or consumer good out to people in a way they find appealing?  Through this internship, I learned how to communicate effectively to various groups and discovered a passion for this field, due to its use of language and words in ways that directly affect people. Without effective communication, companies and businesses would be unable to reach customers whom they did not know wanted to purchase a product. This is the area in which I focused for much of the summer, as many Marylanders were unaware that Maryland Wine was an entity that existed. During my internship with the Maryland Wineries Association, I helped draft, edit, and create a Maryland Wine Press that was distributed to various wineries and their customers over the summer. In addition, I managed all of their social media outputs as a voice for the wineries, including their Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook accounts, along with assisting with the management of their website. Because of this internship, communications is something I hope to pursue in the future job market as a soon-to-be graduate of this institution.
