Women's Rights Initiatives: Title IX

This summer I worked with a civil rights, non-for-profit, membership-based organization called the American Association for Access, Equity, and Diversity in Washington, D.C. Formerly named the American Association for Affirmative Action, the organization focuses on providing trainings, a network of professionals, and distributing updated information on civil rights, diversity, and affirmative action issues. As an intern at the association, I updated and posted on their social media sites, reported on key issues, and attended briefings, hearings, and roundtable discussions about civil and human rights issues. The issue I was most focused on, however, was the issue of Title IX. Title IX is a policy written under the Education Amendment of 1972, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, and gender expression on college campuses. Due to Title IX being such a hot topic this year, I was interested in reporting on the policy at Mount Holyoke College. There is a lot of information regarding the policy and statistical data displaying the compliancy of different colleges and organizations, but there is little on the impact and implementation of the policy on same-sex campuses. This focus connects with the greater theme of human rights and civil solutions by speaking on behalf of the women who attend, work, or teach at Mount Holyoke College. If there is information, resources, and guidance that can be given to students on-campus that are not currently available, my presentation will create a dialogue for civil solutions in regard to the women present at this school.
