A New York City Emergency Room: What Actually Happens There?

There is a little known and seldom discussed phenomenon that occurs in large, urban, public health systems.  This phenomenon is the execution of large-scale research studies.  These studies can happen in surprising settings - an example of which would be in a New York City Emergency Room.  These studies have the capacity to enroll not only a large number of patients, but also patients across a broad demographic, especially concerning those conventionally underrepresented in the healthcare system.  This type of large-scale data collection requires extensive recourses in the form of doctors, interns, statisticians, and public health policy makers to analyze and extract meaning from it.  Those running the National Alliance of Research Associate Programs’ Breast and Cervical Cancer Study have been charged with this task and hope to gain insight that will help to inform public health and public policy decisions in the future.
