Risk It: Be an Actuary
What is an actuary? Although actuaries are consistently named one of the top careers in the US, many people have no clue what they are. Actuaries are risk managers that use mathematics, statistics, economics, and finance to make business decisions within the insurance industry. As an actuarial intern for New York Life Insurance Company, I had the opportunity to work in the Life Research and Analysis department and assist in conducting a mortality experience study. Mortality experience is the actual number of deaths of a population compared with the estimation of expected number of deaths. This is important for insurance companies such as New York Life to accurately price their products. My main project consisted of analyzing mortality experience for policyholders of a variety of different life insurance products. This presentation takes you through the details of my summer project as well as major takeaways for students who are interested in this highly specialized field.
