The Changing Role of Museum Education: ARTstor and Archival Work in the Digital Age
In a world where the value of art is becoming increasingly underfunded and overlooked, advances in information technology and amplified globalization affect museums and museum education in drastic ways. This summer, I helped to increase the educational relevance of the Phoenix Art Museum as a Visual Resources Intern at the museum's art research library. There, I helped to develop the museum's ARTstor database by assisting with photography of art, uploading digital records of the museum's collection and managing data and copyright information. The ARTstor images and information will eventually benefit art researchers on a global scale and allow museum docents to create and present high quality talks to students and other community members. This internship increased my knowledge of archival work, interdisciplinary methods of education through art and art history, and the changing role of museums in public education today.
