Feminism and Sexual and Reproductive Rights in Uruguay

Imagine immersing yourself into a community where feminism, politics and sexual and reproductive rights were always the conversation? It sounds like a dream, right? This past summer I was able to become part of this much coveted environment. I completed my internship with Mujer Y Salud en Uruguay (Women & Health in Uruguay), a feminist women’s non-governmental organization that promotes and defends the sexual and reproductive rights of all women throughout the country. During my two and a half month stay, I researched current laws and policies that pertained to women’s sexual and reproductive health. Furthermore, I was responsible for researching other NGOs in order to schedule meetings with Lilian Abracinskas—the director of MYSU. The most intimidating, yet rewarding part, was writing the platform draft that included the demands from other social organizations representing diverse groups ranging from the Trans community to adolescent sexuality. How did an English major with no prior experience in writing a formal document in Spanish accomplish this? I will discuss this experience in detail because although I had little knowledge about the field I was able to adapt, learn, and ultimately grow as a student, as a woman, and as a person.
