Decomposition and Ecology Education

When a plant, animal, or insect dies, the organic material from the organism is broken down through a process called decomposition. This summer I worked as an education intern at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, designing and implementing a range of different methods for teaching and assessing decomposition knowledge. As part of my education internship, I created my own research project exploring decomposition-related learning patterns among participants of the 2014 Cary Institute Summer Ecology Camp. The experience emphasized the importance of teaching and learning simultaneously, and offered a rigorous and hands-on experience in ecological education work.
