Shaping the Future of South Sudanese Youth
South Sudan is the world’s youngest country, having gained its independence in July 2011. The civil war left many homeless and destroyed several infrastructure. S.T Bartholomeus Orphanage is an organization that not only caters to the needs of orphaned children but also to those abandoned by their parents who are unable to care for them. During the summer, children between the ages 6 and 12 years were mentored and taught mathematical concepts. This was facilitated by structured lesson plans and recreational activities. The program with S.T Bartholomeus Orphanage was a rewarding experience because of the life skills, coaching and educational value it fosters. At the end of the summer, feedback was given to further enhance and develop the program. Although South Sudan has a long way to go to stabilize the country’s volatile atmosphere, educating these children is a start in the right direction.
