Economics Outside Textbooks
In today’s world some of the greatest public policy challenges are economic in nature. Whether it be global financial markets, health care, unemployment, inflation or income inequality - such macroeconomic fundamentals affect our lives on a daily basis. As a result, making efficient policy decisions involves conducting rigorous economic research on such areas that rely on both empirical evidence and theoretical models. This summer I interned as a research assistant at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. As an intern, I assisted in research papers that focused on macroeconomic topics like monetary policy and international trade. As a result, I got to apply the knowledge I gathered through my coursework in an interdisplinary manner. Starting from data analysis using different statistical software to applying economic models in empirical research, this presentation will explore the different aspects of economic research and its scope in making effective public policy decisions. I will also focus on the process of finding the internship and going through successful interviews, as well as adjusting to a new workplace environment and making the most out of your internship.
