Bringing Human Rights Home
How can a small team in New York City connect US activists to cases of human rights violations around the world? The Individuals at Risk department of Amnesty International USA acts as the messenger between human rights violations committed against individuals around the world and US activists who are ready to take action. Our IAR team worked full-time this summer to ensure that our systems that provide updated information and calls for action were consistently running. This presentation details the structure and efforts behind three different levels of casework: AIUSA’s Urgent Action Network, Focus Cases, and the Case Commitment Initiative. The Urgent Action Network consists of extremely urgent daily cases that are sent out to US activists, calling for actions that are then logged, Focus Cases are in-depth campaigns on individuals whose cases have been elevated due to urgency and strategic opportunity, and the Case Commitment Initiative is a collection of over 200 cases that each have a corresponding local or student group continuously demanding justice.
