Learn to Shoot Like a Man: A Woman’s Guide to the Film Industry
As an aspiring female director, I have always felt obligated to know as much as possible about filmmaking in order to thrive in a male-dominated industry. However, I know it is not always beneficial to be gender-selective with internships, especially in a field where internships are difficult and scarce as is. This summer I had the privilege to shadow a male director for an episode of NCIS and saw the process of creating a show from pre-production and production to post-production. While this experience taught me a lot about the issues and foresight a director must take into consideration to quickly produce an episode, I gained even more understanding about how to thrive as a woman in the male-dominated field of directing by observing how his relationship with the crew was successful. Working on the set of a TV show also opened my eyes to the creative and problem-solving skills needed to executive produce, and encouraged me to be open minded about pursuing administrative production roles.
