Teaching and Learning: A Nepali Education
The biggest mountains that I surmounted this summer in Nepal were not the Himalaya. Instead they were the everyday challenges that I faced while acquainting myself with a culture that I had previously known little about. In my presentation I aim to shed light on how to traverse through the exciting, yet at times daunting, undertaking of volunteering abroad as an English teacher. Whether through determining how to choose and obtain an internship that is not associated with Mount Holyoke, through learning what is necessary to thrive in a working environment with little provided structure, or through navigating the emotional, mental, and physical minefield of culture shock, I learned many more lessons than I taught. The experiences I had while teaching English to Nepali school children confirmed my belief that living abroad is truly one of the world’s most meaningful educations.
