Following Your Own Path: Empowering Children Through the Power of Words
In Tanzania, approximately 75% of children experience physical and/or emotional abuse before the age of 18. While recovering from this trauma is a lifelong process, as a project leader at Haradali Primary School in Tanzania, I worked to develop and launch “Stories for Peace,” a pilot program that uses creative writing as an expressive, restorative and therapeutic tool to help children from underprivileged and abusive backgrounds empower themselves. My experience has led me to reflect on the intersection between education, innovation and development. In this presentation I will address how my Mount Holyoke education pushed me to follow my passion, and how my 2 months in Arusha challenged me both personally and professionally. In addition, I will reflect on how this experience has helped me to understand learning as a lifelong process that can happen far beyond the walls of a classroom.
