Cultivating Connections: Women’s Rights and Social Media
As you may have heard, the U.S. Women's National Team dominated the competition last summer, winning the FIFA Women's World Cup. Unfortunately, the athletes weren’t on an equal playing field: they played on turf, not real grass like the Men's World Cup. As a Communications Intern at Legal Momentum, the Women's Legal Defense and Education Fund, I worked on their #breakthegrassceiling social media campaign to increase awareness of this inequality. Another women’s rights issue that I researched was online sex trafficking, focusing particularly on backpage.com and its related crimes. Using this information, I created a map of these crimes to provide a bigger picture of the harms of unregulated online prostitution. Through my work, I learned how to write in a professional voice and engage in nonprofit communications.
