Let Their Voices Be Heard: Community Radio in Latin America
Indigenous Peoples in Latin America continue to face violence, oppression, and poverty. However, Latin America is also in a great moment of change, as more left-leaning political regimes come to power and social movements continue to form. Cultural Survival is a non-profit organization based in Cambridge, MA, that supports Indigenous Peoples around the world through advocacy and community radio. As an intern, the presenter helped distribute radio programs to Latin America and did research that will be instrumental in the fight to legalize community radio in many Central American countries. In this presentation, the presenter will reflect on the work she did this summer, the importance of the fight to legalize community radio, and personal understandings of what it means to fight for the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
