Cultivating Connections: Speaking on behalf of a Larger Organization
Austin Bat Cave (ABC), a small nonprofit in Texas, has essentially nothing to do with bats. ABC provides free writing programs for kids in Austin, many of whom attend schools that have low funding for literacy programs. The core of ABC’s mission is to keep these programs free, and the biggest contributing factor that makes this possible is an impressively large network of volunteers, parents, and local businesses. My internship required me to adopt the voice of a very particular brand to speak to this network of people. One day I flew to Texas, and the next I was speaking to managers on behalf of ABC, an organization I, myself, had only learned about a few months before. Being dropped into my internship position pushed me to find myself in a professional environment and learn to use my own strengths and voice to help ABC shine.
