The Urban Underserved: Medicine in Minority Communities
Newark, New Jersey has a highly diverse, low-income population and community health efforts are concentrated in this area to better the quality of life for these residents. I spent my summer at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and the adjoining University Hospital through the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program, an internship for pre-health undergraduates to provide students with an understanding of gross anatomy via human cadaver, shadowing experiences with a variety of specialists, and obtaining a perspective of public health as it intersects with the medical field.
