Exploring the Connecticut River’s Floodplain Forests: a Summer of Fieldwork
This past summer I interned with the Nature Conservancy where I researched floodplains along the Connecticut River. This entailed collecting soil sediment samples from floodplains that were then analyzed in a UMASS-Amherst lab. The data I collected will be used to inform the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood control dams along with restoration and conservation projects. While collecting the floodplain samples, I learned that fieldwork is muddy, dirty, unpredictable and challenging both physically and mentally. Fieldwork also was a wonderful experience that taught me how to successfully conduct research in the outdoors while gaining a deeper appreciation, and love for the natural world.
