Distraught by Data: Prioritizing Human Interaction in the Workplace
This summer I worked as an undergraduate research assistant at the Early Development Lab at the University of Virginia. The project I worked on examined how different types of TV affect children’s cognitive functions. I was excited to be involved in this research because I wanted to see what it was like to work with human subjects. Due to unlucky timing however, I only got the opportunity to run one participant. Instead, I spent the majority of my time coding data and recruiting participants for a different study. While the situation was unfortunate, it gave me a chance to reflect on what I prioritize in a job. It made me consider that, even though I enjoy research and had a great experience at UVA, creating meaningful connections with people as a part of my job might be more important to me than I had originally thought.
