Collaboration and Independence in the Process of Publishing a Book
As the human impact on the environment intensifies, the need for international environmental governance is becoming increasingly critical. Consequently, governmental and non-governmental organizations are actively working together to create and implement policy to protect the environment. For my internship, I worked with a professor on the publication of a book analyzing the various actors, from farmers to large international organizations, involved in environmental policy negotiations that have taken place to locally protect the enormous amount of biodiversity on the island of Madagascar. Working independently and with little supervision, I ran into a fair share of complications and barriers, which I spent countless hours attempting to solve independently before figuring it out myself or giving in and asking for help. However, through this experience, I learned the valuable lesson that working independently does not necessarily mean never asking questions and that from a project supervisor’s view, questions are expected and appreciated.
