A Look To the Future Through Challenges and Barriers
I have always known that I wanted to play an integral role in other people’s health, so this past summer I interned at the Holyoke Health Center - a federally-qualified community health center located in Holyoke, Massachusetts. During my time spent at the health center, I was exposed to a variety of health care services including routine physicals, psychiatric screenings, dental surgeries, and obstetric care which gave me a glimpse of the many career possibilities within medicine. My internship led me to face many challenges, including a language barrier, exposure to chronic illness, and the effects of poverty in overall health. Despite my lack of clinical experience, I was able to create an authentic and memorable experience through wonderful mentors and the realization that you need to face challenges head on and ask for help when necessary.
