Carol Hoffmann Collins '63

A longtime supporter of things international at MHC, Carol Collins recently established an endowed chair in international studies, a combined position with international relations and politics. This new teacher-scholar will become Mount Holyoke’s 37th chairholder at MHC. Said Carol recently, “It is my hope that this commitment will contribute to the current Campaign, the Mellon Foundation Challenge, and my fifteith reunion in 2013.” Carol’s gift has turned her hope to reality.

Collins previously funded the Carol Hoffmann Collins Directorship and Global Scholar-in-Residence, both anchored in the McCulloch Center for Global Initiatives.

Collins has said that her early interest in a larger world was furthered by her Mount Holyoke education. Her gift to the College reflects both her sense of obligation to higher education and a view, substantiated by experience, that international education enhances international engagement.

Says Don O’Shea, dean of faculty and vice president for academic affairs: “For some time, Mount Holyoke has been among the most global of the liberal arts colleges. It draws its faculty from around the world, and a quarter of our students come from over 70 countries. Carol Collins’s magnificent gift establishing a chair in international studies will allow us to attract and retain a first-rate scholar with an international reputation to further shape our curriculum and build on this extraordinary human capital.”
