Co-crystal Engineering-Improving the Characteristics of Indomethacin Drug through Crystallography
Indomethacin is a nonsteroidal, anti inflammatory drug that has great potential for pain relief, but its low water solubility makes it difficult to use. It reduces inflammation that may occur in arthritis, muscle and bone injuries such as sprains and strains, menstrual cramps, swelling and pain due to bone dislocation. My lab was trying to improve its solubility and bioavailability by modifying its structure. Indomethacin has a carboxyl group in its structure. The hydrogen on this carboxyl group enables indomethacin to hydrogen bond with other molecules. Throughout the research; we attempted to co-crystallize indomethacin with other compounds in a bid to develop pharmaceutical co-crystals with improved water solubility, stability and bioavailability.
