Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

The Mount Holyoke College Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) is a federally mandated committee responsible for oversight of the institutional animal care and use program. Details can be found on the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals website.

The IACUC

  • ensures that the institution complies with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to animal care and use
  • reviews and approves research, teaching, or testing activities that involve vertebrate animals or cephalopods ensuring the continual humane treatment of the College’s laboratory animals
  • monitors animal care and use, and addresses concerns about animal welfare.
  • inspects animal facilities and study areas at least every six months.
  • develops policy on vertebrate animal use for the institution
  • is empowered to suspend a project if it finds noncompliance with government regulations or College policy.
  • has oversight of training of all persons using vertebrate animals.
